The partial government shutdown is nearing the end of its second week with no sign of resolution. Since October 1, when funding under the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2013 (P.L. 113-6) ran out, most non-essential government employees – about 400,000 in total – have not been working. Many other federal employees are on the job, but not collecting a pay check.

Congress and the Obama administration have been unable to come to an agreement about a continuing resolution to temporarily fund all federal government functions. The debate over funding the government now includes the necessity of raising the federal debt ceiling in the next few weeks to prevent the federal government from defaulting on its debts.

On October 10, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) was poised to propose a short-term increase in the debt ceiling through November 22, in order to facilitate discussions on the broader, thornier issues of deficit reduction and Obamacare.

In the meantime, the partial shutdown continues.
