Former public officials settling into private practice

A number of former public servants in the realm of health law have lately shifted to or within private practice. The firms of Arent Fox LLP, Crowell & Moring LLP, Greenberg Traurig LLP, and Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP can now boast the services of former FDA division directors and regulatory counsel and two former health fraud prosecutors.

Arent Fox

Two former FDA officials have joined Arent Fox’s Washington, D.C. office. Brian Malkin continues his private practice at Arent Fox after leaving McGuireWoods, where he utilized his experience gained as regulatory counsel at the FDA to lead the FDA regulatory team. Malkin relies on his intellectual property experience to advise drug company clients. Paul Gadiock recently served as an associate director at the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological health, and will now use his first-hand policy experience in private practice.

Additionally, Arent Fox welcomes Rachel Hold-Weiss home as a partner in the New York office after a stint as Associate General Counsel and Corporate Compliance Officer for Personal-Touch Home Care. Hold-Weiss has an extensive history in health care and the regulatory landscape as a physician assistant with experience in clinical settings and the firm believes that her time serving in-house offered valuable exposure to the issues the firm’s clients face on a daily basis.

Arent Fox also announced Jo-Ann Marchica’s promotion to counsel in the Washington, D.C. office, where she helps various health care stakeholders navigate transactional, regulatory, and compliance landscapes.

Crowell & Moring

The former director of the Department of Justice’s Corporate Health Care Fraud Strike Force, Laura Cordova, decided on Crowell & Moring for her shift back to private practice. As a partner in the Washington, D.C. office, she will help clients avoid and defend against charges of health care fraud.

Greenberg Traurig

Former FDA Director in the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) Karen Corallo has landed at Greenberg Traurig Washington D.C.’s office. As of counsel in the Health & FDA Business Practice, she will share her considerable experience gained from serving in CDER, where she executed the agency’s drug imports strategy, as well as in the FDA’s Office of Chief Counsel. Prior to the FDA, Corallo was a litigation partner and also served as in-house counsel at a Fortune 100 company.

Hinshaw & Culbertson

Vaishali Rao brings her experience as Assistant Attorney General for the state of Illinois to Hinshaw & Culbertson, where she will counsel clients on regulatory compliance, including those in the health care industry. During her time in public service, she was a supervisor in the Consumer Fraud Bureau, leading investigations and enforcement on various fraud cases.
